Pizarro

In 1532, after ascending the Andes Mountains, Francisco Pizarro led his soldiers to Cajamarca, Peru, to confront the leader of the Inca Empire. Greatly outnumbered, but equipped with superior weapons, the Spaniards surprised the Incas in the town square. Pizarro won a decisive victory killing thousands of Incas. This began Pizarro's conquest of the Inca Empire in South America. Before his death, Pizarro amassed incredible wealth plundering the Incas' treasures and established a Spanish colony in South America. Author Liz Sonneborn examines the life of this brutal conquistador.

Exploration of the vast Inca Empire and its wealth of gold and silver continue to fascinate modern-day historians. Spanish explorer Francisco Pizarro played a leading role in this exploration with his conquest of Peru (1522-1548). This biography tells the story of Pizarros explorations and life in a captivating way using informative text and appealing graphics. Pizarro reached the coast of South America in 1524 and had his first encounter with the Inca Indians in 1528. Pizarro lost no time and successfully petitioned the Spanish crown for permission to conquer the Inca Empire in 1529. The major battle occurred in 1532 when Pizarro and his troops confronted the Incas in Cajamarca, Peru. While Pizarro was outnumbered, the Indians had no weapons. By the end of the battle, the Spaniards had killed thousands of Inca Indians. From there, Pizarro went on to amass great riches by plundering the Incas treasures and to establish a Spanish colony in South America. This book will be of interest both to students studying early European exploration as well as those interested in the great Inca Empire. Besides its six chapters detailing Pizarros life, there is also an explorer timeline, a glossary and references for further reading and research. The book is in the series Great Explorers of the World., Children's Literature
