Jack Gantos
Jack Gantos is the popular author of over a dozen books about Rotten Ralph, a mischievous cat, as well as the Jack Henry and Joey Pigza books. Based on an interview with Gantos, Michelle Parker-Rock tells all about Gantos's childhood and his early days as a writer. This book provides a fascinating glimpse into the life of the well-respected and loved author, Jack Gantos. The book covers many aspects of Gantos' childhood, how he decided to become an author, and where some of his stories originated. Throughout the book the author uses Mr. Gantos' own words to explain or elaborate on certain facts. This method helps the reader relate to the author and his stories. The book also explains in detail how Mr. Gantos uses a journal or post-it notes to record his ideas throughout the day (pictures of these journals are included.) The advice he gives young students is priceless. After reading this book, the reader will want to start carrying a journal and taking notes on life. The author's use of Gantos' own words lets the reader into his creative process, and introduces the reader to a skill that is important to all students, writing. The glossary in the back of the book is very useful for younger students, and the color pictures and print will entice students to pick up this book. Recommended., Library Media Connection March 2008
