In this book, part of the Fun and Simple State Crafts series, students learn about the six states in the southern region of states while making a variety of crafts. The book begins with a colored map of the United States highlighting the region, and a short introduction giving a little information about the history and physical characteristics of these southern states. The states are in geographical order, starting with Kentucky and moving in clockwise order ending with Arkansas. There are two crafts per state, plus a two-page table listing basic state facts—capital, size, bird, motto, etc. Included in this section is a small image of the state flag. The two-page spread for each craft includes a text box with items needed, a short background note about the subject of the craft, a few color photographs of the craft in various stages, and numbered instructions. The lack of detail in the instructions may frustrate some students. One project tells readers to spell a dogs name in Braille, without any explanation of what Braille is or how the name translates to Braille besides the photo of the finished project. Another project tells students to coil the clay to make a piece of pottery. Patterns for some of the crafts are included at the back of the book, with directions for enlarging on a copy machine. A resource page lists several books and two commercial Internet sites., Children's Literature
