Feinstein traces the decades contrasting themes of fear and prosperity, unrest and comfortable materialism, and rebellion and conformity throughout chapters divided into five areas of focus: lifestyles, medical and scientific advancement, arts and entertainment, politics, and sports. The straightforward text flows easily and ably distills information into the brief, survey format. Young people may be particularly attracted to the nice mix of illustrations, which include photos of a familys bomb shelter and an aerial view of the expanding suburbs as well as images from film and advertising. An expanded time line offers more context, and the reading list provides good suggestions for research.
